I’ve turned July over to Momcomm readers while I vacation, visit family and take a little break from blogging. This month’s guest posters were randomly selected and boy are they awesome! Stop by each Tuesday and Thursday and see who’s holding down the fort while I’m gone.
Today I welcome Sharon from Mom of 6 answering, “How has blogging changed you?” Sharon and I have known each other in blogland for a while but I just met her in person at Type A… and even got to be part of a dance team with her during the Ubisoft party. She pretty much rocks.
It was only two years ago that pretty much all of my time was taken up by this business of kid-raising. I was a full time-at-home Mom raising 6 kids between the ages of 4 and 9… and when your kids are young, and you have so many of them…. that’s just what life is all about.
But I noticed that whenever I was out and about with the kids, I was stopped by other Moms (and even grandmas) all of the time asking me, “How do you do it?” And they really wanted some tips… not just a flippant “I don’t know, I just take it one hour at a time!” At swimming lessons or at the soccer field when I was busy working on my weekly family calendar or planning activities for our summer camp at home, I had people peering over my shoulder, asking me to teach them to do the same kinds of things that I was doing to manage my busy life.
So once my youngest son started full-time preschool, I decided to start answering those questions on my blog, Momof6. And while I certainly hope (and believe!) that Momof6 has helped other Moms organize their home and their families… it has given even more back to me.
Blogging has delivered a new passion to my life!
There is no denying that is absolutely fun to do something that you enjoy doing just for you! I have always loved to write, and loved to share helpful advice. So to combine these two things into my blog has created such a personal drive inside of me to do more… to push this “project” further along.
Blogging has taken a hobby that I love- and opened so many new doors for me!
Creating my own website and challenging myself to write for it every day, to learn about this new business- how to design a website, how to build traffic, how to engage with others- has created this entirely new repertoire of skills for me, that I have been able to use to secure new job opportunities and earn income for my family. These are career paths that I would have never even thought to approach- such as video creation and editing, social media engagement, and coordinating website content for a well-known media organization.
Blogging has pushed me to tackle projects for my home and for my kids that might never have reached the top of my to-do list!
Big projects like cleaning out my basement and garage in 4-week decluttering challenges. Smaller things like decorating my home for the seasons. It has forced me to get organized for the holidays ahead of time, so that I have enough time to write about it. Does that sound a little crazy- as if I am structuring my life around what I want to write about? Maybe so…. but my husband will tell you- our home has never been this organized, or decorated, our meals never so well-planned, and our holidays so festive and de-stressed!
Blogging has given me to access to so many new online friends.
Blogging and social media creates this fantastic built-in support system. You can share your posts, and other people will read them and talk about how your words relate to their own lives. But even better- you can also reach out when you are having a tough day and find instant support from dozens of online friends…. which can actually be much harder to achieve with in-real-life buds. I am so grateful for these relationships.
But one of the greatest ways that blogging has changed me?
Blogging has shown my children that I can do more than just Mom-jobs! That I am a person with goals and dreams, and abilities too!
My name is Sharon and I am the busy Mom of six children ages 11, 10, 8, 8, 6, and 6. People often ask me “How do you do it?”, so I created Momof6 – a place where I write about organizing your home, using a family calendar, creating household routines, hosting at-home birthday parties and holding a DIY summer camp!
